Good news — your invoices are on us. LazyDogTemplates now has a completely free invoice generator: pick a style, fill in your details, and download a clean, professional invoice in minutes. No sign-up, no cost.

It's built for real billing, not just a blank page. Choose your invoice type, then pick your industry — Freelancer, Medical, Restaurant, Construction, Legal, Real Estate, Retail, Events and more — and the fields arrive pre-labeled for how that line of work actually bills.

What Should an Invoice Include?

A proper invoice needs to contain your business name and contact details, the client's name and address, a unique invoice number, the invoice date, and a payment due date. The body of the invoice lists your services or products — each with a quantity and unit price — followed by a subtotal, any applicable tax, and the total amount owed.

Beyond the numbers, a notes field matters. That's where you put your payment terms (Net 14, Net 30, due on receipt), your bank transfer details or preferred payment method, and any late payment conditions. A complete, clearly laid-out invoice leaves no room for a client to claim they didn't know what to pay or when.

Four Steps, Then Send

Choose your type, pick your industry, select a design, then fill and download. That's the whole flow — no account to create, nothing to install. You can have a finished invoice ready to send before a paid tool would finish loading.

Everything a Real Invoice Needs

Invoice number, your choice of currency, a due date, as many line items as you need, an automatic subtotal, an adjustable tax rate, and a running total that updates as you type. There's a notes field for payment terms or bank details.

And when you're ready to download, you can turn the LazyDog branding off for a completely clean, watermark-free invoice.

Invoice vs Receipt — What's the Difference?

An invoice is a request for payment. You send it before the client pays, telling them what they owe and by when. A receipt is a confirmation of payment — issued after the money has landed, as proof the transaction is settled.

Both documents matter. The invoice creates the obligation; the receipt closes it. If a client asks for proof that they've paid, they need a receipt, not a copy of the invoice. If they want to understand what they're being charged for before they pay, they need the invoice.

Invoice vs Quote — Which Comes First?

A quote (sometimes called an estimate or proposal) comes before any work begins. It tells the client what the job will cost and gives them the chance to agree before you start. An invoice comes after — once the work is delivered or a milestone is reached — and is a formal demand for payment.

Sending a quote first protects you both. The client knows exactly what they agreed to, and you have a record that the price was accepted before any dispute could arise. Once they've approved the quote and you've done the work, the invoice is simply the final step to get paid.

What Payment Terms Should You Use?

The most common terms are Net 30 (payment due within 30 days), Net 14 (within 14 days), Net 7 (within 7 days), and Due on Receipt (pay immediately on receiving the invoice). Freelancers and small businesses typically benefit from shorter terms — Net 7 or Net 14 — to avoid long waits that squeeze cash flow.

You can also add a late payment clause: something like "2% interest per month applies to overdue balances" is standard and gives you a basis to chase late payers. Put this in the notes field along with your bank details or payment link so everything the client needs is in one place.

Is a Free Invoice Template Legally Valid?

Yes — completely. The legal validity of an invoice depends on what it contains, not what software produced it. A free template is every bit as valid as one from expensive accounting software, provided it has the right information: your details, the client's details, a clear breakdown of charges, a due date, and a total.

For most freelancers and small businesses, the LazyDog invoice generator produces everything you need. If you operate in a country with specific invoicing regulations — some require a VAT number, a business registration number, or a particular format — just make sure those details are included in the fields provided. The template is a tool; the content is what matters.

Free, and Genuinely Free

No trial, no "free until you hit download." You fill it in, you download it, and it's yours to send. That's the whole point — quick, professional invoices that don't cost you anything.

More industry presets and designs are on the way. The tool stays free as it grows.
