Set 06 · Modern · Resumes

Fresh Start, for a change of field.

A resume that lists your jobs in order tells a reader what you have been. When you are changing direction, that is the one story you do not want told. These three lead with evidence instead of chronology — a soldier moving into logistics, a shopkeeper moving into sales, and someone returning to Pakistan after nine years abroad.

Nine years in Dubai, now applying locally. The problem is not the experience — it is that local employers quietly wonder whether you will stay, and whether your salary expectations are realistic.

Why this one works

Translation, not exaggeration

Career-change advice usually tells you to "highlight transferable skills", which sounds sensible and helps nobody. The real work is narrower and more mechanical: take each thing you genuinely did, and write it in the words your target industry uses for that same thing.

A soldier who ran distribution for 800 people did logistics. A shopkeeper who managed 140 trade accounts did B2B account management. A teacher who ran five sections managed cohorts. None of this is invention — it is the same fact, spoken in the reader's language.

The test is whether the original could be reconstructed from your sentence. "Directed supply and distribution for a unit of 800 personnel" is exactly true. "Led enterprise-wide supply chain transformation" is not, and it will not survive an interview.

What goes first

A strict chronological resume is an argument that your future looks like your past. When you are changing direction, that is precisely the wrong argument, but the solution is not the "functional resume" — the format that lists skills and hides dates. Recruiters have seen it, and it now reads as concealment. Some tracking systems parse it into nothing at all.

Keep the chronology. Change what leads.

The dates stay honest and in order. It is the emphasis that moves.

The three silent objections

A hiring manager reading a career changer has three doubts they will never say aloud. Your resume has to answer all three before the interview, because there may not be one.

Can they actually do it? Answered by evidence, not enthusiasm. One real piece of work in the new field — a part-time role, a freelance project, a qualification — outweighs any amount of stated motivation.

Will they leave? The suspicion is that you are experimenting. A completed qualification in the new field is the strongest available answer, because it costs money and years and nobody does it on a whim.

Will they accept the salary? Rarely stated, frequently decisive — especially for someone returning from abroad or leaving a business. You do not put money on a resume, but you can remove the excuse: "relocated permanently" and a local address do more than a paragraph would.

Change direction, or let Hexa turn the page.
