Sample OneEntry level · Two years
Two years of work, one page, and no padding. Notice that nothing is described as "assisted with" — every line has an outcome attached, even at this level.

Why this one works
- The internship is listed as a job. It was real work at a real company. Six months of evidence should never be thrown away because the title said intern.
- Every bullet ends somewhere. Three days to one. Ninety-nine percent. Eighteen percent. Two years of experience can still carry four numbers.
- The skills are specific. "MS Office" means nothing — everyone writes it. "Excel (Pivot, VLOOKUP)" is a claim that can be tested, which is why it is believed.
- One column, no table, no text box. This is the whole point of the format. It looks plain because plain is what parses.
Sample TwoSix years · HR generalist
Six years is the point where you must start leaving things out. Two roles are shown in full; everything before them is compressed into a single line at the bottom.

Why this one works
- "Earlier" is one line. Two assistant roles from 2018 to 2019 became a single row. They prove the timeline is unbroken without spending eight lines saying nothing new.
- The profile names the company size. "400-person manufacturer" tells a reader instantly whether this experience is the right scale for their own organisation.
- Two of the four bullets are projects, not duties. The HRIS migration and the screening rebuild. Duties prove attendance; projects prove judgement.
- Labour law is listed as a skill. For an HR role in Pakistan this is the single most searched term in the tracker, and most candidates leave it out entirely.
Sample ThreeEleven years · Operations · Manila
The same parsing rules, wearing colour. A band across the top, a scope strip, and one clean column beneath — nothing here confuses a parser, because the software reads text and never sees the ink. Eleven years, still one page.

Why this one works
- Colour and parsing are not in conflict. An applicant tracking system extracts text; it never sees the ink. This page is as machine-readable as a plain one and considerably harder to forget.
- One column under the band. The colour lives in the header, where nothing needs parsing. Below it the reading order is a single unambiguous line, which is what the software wants.
- The scope strip answers the first question. Eleven years, four sites, USD 6M, 62 people. A senior reader wants the size of the job before the detail.
- Every role carries a number. 96.2% to 99.4%. Overtime down 34%. Nine hours to five. Mis-sorts down 40%. Eleven years compressed into four figures a reader remembers.
What an ATS actually does
Almost everything written about applicant tracking systems is wrong. They are not artificial intelligence, they do not score your personality, and in most companies they do not reject you automatically. What they do is simpler and more dangerous: they read your file and try to split it into fields — name, email, phone, employer, job title, start date, end date, school, degree.
That is called parsing. When it works, a recruiter searching for "payroll" and "Karachi" finds you. When it fails, your job history lands in the wrong boxes or lands nowhere, and you are simply absent from every search the recruiter runs. Nobody rejected you. You were never there.
So the goal is not to please a robot. It is to be findable by the human who comes after it.
Six things that break it
- Tables. A two-column table looks tidy and parses as scrambled word order.
- Text boxes. Many parsers do not read inside them at all — your name can vanish.
- Headers and footers. Contact details placed there are frequently skipped entirely.
- Icons instead of labels. A little envelope picture is not the word "Email".
- Photos. Fine for Gulf applications, useless to the parser, and a distraction elsewhere.
- Creative date formats. Write "Jan 2022 — Present". Not "'22-now", not a timeline graphic.
Every sample on this page avoids all six. That is the entire reason they look plain. The restraint is the feature, not a shortage of design.
How to test your own in one minute
You do not need special software. Open your resume, select everything, copy it, and paste it into a plain Notepad file.
Read what comes out. If your job titles and dates are in a sensible order and nothing is missing, a parser will manage. If your name is gone, the columns are interleaved, or your employers are separated from their dates — that is exactly what the tracker stores about you.
Do this before every application where you have changed the layout. It takes a minute and it is the only ATS test that matters.
Four rewrites that change everything
Weak
Responsible for managing daily operations of the warehouse facility.
Strong
Ran a 26-staff distribution centre handling 1,400 outbound orders daily.
Responsibility is a job description. What you did with it is a resume.
Weak
Helped improve efficiency and reduce costs across the department.
Strong
Removed PKR 31M in annual cost through route consolidation, with no redundancies.
"Helped improve" could mean anything from leading the project to attending the meeting. Say which, and say by how much.
Weak
Hard-working team player with excellent communication skills.
Strong
HR generalist with six years across recruitment, payroll and employee relations for a 400-person manufacturer.
Nobody has ever been hired for claiming to be hard-working. The second version tells a reader what you are and at what scale, in one line.
Weak
Skills: MS Office, Communication, Teamwork, Leadership
Strong
Skills: Payroll Administration, HRIS Implementation, Pakistan Labour Law, Grievance Handling
The first list is what everyone writes, so it distinguishes nobody. The second is made of the exact words a recruiter types into the search box.
Take the pattern, or hand over your history.
All three samples are yours to read and copy. If you want them as editable Word files, or want this format rebuilt with your own jobs and numbers in it, both take a minute.
