Most cover letters are read for four seconds and thrown away, because they open by announcing that you are applying for a job the reader already knows you applied for. A letter earns its place only by saying something the resume cannot. Three samples, each with a different opening that works.
The most reliable opening: lead with the single strongest fact about you, before any pleasantry. The reader is deciding whether to keep reading during that sentence.
In my current role I cut blended cost per lead from PKR 640 to PKR 310 while growing organic traffic 3.4 times. Your advertisement asks for someone who can bring acquisition cost down without cutting volume, and that is the problem I have spent four years on.
At Bykea I own a PKR 4M annual paid budget across search and social. The saving came from two decisions rather than better bidding: moving 40% of spend into content that already ranked, and killing three campaigns that looked profitable on last-click and were not on any other model. The second decision was unpopular for a quarter and then obviously right.
Before that I managed PKR 1.8M quarterly at Zameen.com at a 3.1 return on ad spend, and built the abandoned-enquiry email flow that recovered 12% of lost leads. I mention it because your listing mentions lifecycle marketing, and that flow is the closest thing I have to it.
I know Shan is moving more spend into measurable channels this year. I would like to talk about where that money should go and, more usefully, where it should not.
When your numbers are good but not unusual, lead with a specific reason for wanting this employer — specific enough that it could not be sent to anyone else.
I read your engineering post on cutting p95 latency by moving read traffic off the primary, and recognised the problem — I did a smaller version of it last year and got median response from 800ms to 320ms. Yours was the harder case and the writeup was the reason I applied.
For the last three years I have worked on the API layer at Systems Limited: a Node and Postgres service handling around 15,000 payment transactions a month. The latency work was the interesting part, but the change I am proudest of is less glamorous — I took automated test coverage from 34% to 81%, which halved the hotfixes we shipped on Fridays.
I have not worked at your scale. I have read enough of your engineering writing to know roughly what I would be walking into, and I would rather join a team that publishes its mistakes than one that does not.
My GitHub is on my resume, including the small library I maintain. I would be glad to talk about the read-replica work, or about anything in the codebase you would want a new engineer to fix first.
If a person told you about this job, that belongs in the first line. A referral is the strongest opening available and most people bury it in paragraph three.
Adeel Bhatti suggested I write to you. He and I worked opposite sides of the same route network for two years at National Foods, and he mentioned you are looking for someone to take the northern distribution centres.
I currently run three centres, 68 staff and a PKR 240M operating budget. Over two years we took on-time dispatch from 82% to 96% and removed PKR 31M of annual cost, and I want to be clear that we did the second without a single redundancy — we consolidated routes and renegotiated two contracts instead.
The part of your advertisement that interested me is the line about integrating the two newly acquired depots. I have not done an integration at that scale, but I rebuilt a shift roster across three sites last year that cut overtime spend 34% while holding output flat, and the hard part of that was the same: persuading people who had done it one way for years.
I am happy to speak whenever suits, and Adeel is glad to be contacted if that is useful.
A cover letter has exactly one job: say something true and useful that the resume cannot say. If your letter summarises your resume in prose, it is not a letter — it is a slower copy of a document the reader already has.
Three things only a letter can do.
If none of those three apply to your situation, a short letter is better than a long one, and no letter is better than a padded one.
The first sentence decides whether the rest is read. These four all work, and all of them begin with information rather than announcement.
And the one to delete permanently: "I am writing to apply for the position of X as advertised on Y." The reader knows. It is the envelope, not the letter.
Every sample on this page uses the same structure, and it holds for almost any application.
One page. Never two. If it runs long, the middle paragraph is the one carrying too much — the detail belongs in the resume, and the letter should keep only what explains it.
I am writing to express my keen interest in the Marketing Manager position advertised on your website.
In my current role I cut blended cost per lead from PKR 640 to PKR 310 while growing organic traffic 3.4 times.
The first sentence uses the most valuable line on the page to state something already known.
I am a hard-working and dedicated professional with excellent communication skills and a passion for excellence.
The saving came from two decisions rather than better bidding: moving 40% of spend into content that already ranked, and killing three campaigns that looked profitable on last-click.
Adjectives about yourself carry no information. The mechanism does, and it is the only thing the letter can add.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience and thank you for your time and consideration.
I would like to talk about where that money should go and, more usefully, where it should not.
A polite non-statement, or a reason to reply. Only one of them gets a call.
All three samples are free to read and copy. Want them as editable Word files, or a letter written from your own history and the advert you are answering? Both take a minute.
