Set 09 · Minimal · Resumes

Swiss Minimal, set on a grid.

For design, architecture and research roles, the resume is itself a piece of work — and the people reading it can tell in two seconds whether you understand hierarchy, spacing and restraint. This set is typographically disciplined and says almost nothing decoratively, which for these readers is the entire argument.

Every line is a decision and an outcome. No adjectives about craft — a product design lead will judge the craft from the portfolio, and the resume from the thinking.

Why this one works

Why designers should send plain resumes

It feels wrong. You design for a living, the resume is a design object, and leaving it plain seems like a missed opportunity. Three reasons it is not.

The portfolio already carries the aesthetic argument, and carries it better — full-size, in context, with the reasoning attached. Nothing a resume can do competes with that.

A heavily designed resume competes with itself. The reader is trying to find out whether you have shipped anything measurable, and every decorative element is friction between them and that answer.

And restraint is itself legible to this audience. A designer who can leave space, hold a grid and resist ornament is demonstrating judgement on the page. To a design director, a disciplined plain resume reads as confidence; an elaborate one frequently reads as compensation.

Design outcomes, not descriptions

The commonest failure in design resumes is describing what was made instead of what it did.

If a number genuinely does not exist — early-stage work, killed projects, confidential clients — use scale instead. Users affected, team size, project value, duration. Scale is always available and always better than an adjective.

The typographic rules of this set

For anyone rebuilding this by hand rather than downloading it, the discipline is small and specific.

None of this is decoration. It is what makes the page readable in the eleven seconds it will actually receive.

Let the portfolio carry it, and keep the page quiet.

All three samples are free to read and copy. Want them as editable Word files, or your own work rewritten around outcomes rather than descriptions? Both take a minute.
