“Salman is the rare engineering leader who is as clear about what he refused to build as what he shipped.”— Yasir Ahmed, Chief Technology Officer
Why this one works
- One bullet is a decision not to do something. Declining the rewrite and extracting four services instead is the most senior line on the page. Directors are paid for the projects they kill.
- Reliability is expressed as a funding choice. "A standing 20% allocation" shows how the outcome was bought — with capacity, deliberately, against competing pressure.
- Time-to-productivity is included. Fourteen weeks to five is a hiring-machine metric, not an engineering one, and it signals thinking at the level above the code.
- Attrition appears with its cause. On-call compensation is a specific, costly decision. The 31% to 9% is the proof it was the right one.

“Zoya was the first marketing lead we had who could defend the budget in the same language the finance director used.”— Naveed Siddiq, Chief Executive
Why this one works
- Return on ad spend leads. A chief executive does not track campaigns; they track whether marketing is an investment or a cost. 2.1× to 4.6× answers that in one line.
- Agency consolidation is a director decision. Nine to three, PKR 140M saved, "with no output loss". Managers run agencies; directors decide how many there should be.
- The budget shift is shown as defended. "Defended it at board level" is the part that matters — the strategy was contested and survived.
- Share growth is set against a flat category. 4.2 points where the market was not growing means the points came from competitors.

“Farhan took cost out of the workforce without a single day of unrest. I have not seen that done twice in my career.”— Musadaq Zulqarnain, Chairman
Why this one works
- Turnover is converted into money. "34% to 25%, saving an estimated PKR 190M in replacement cost" translates an HR metric into the language of the finance director. Say "estimated" — it keeps the claim honest.
- The restructuring bullet carries its method. PKR 310M saved "with no compulsory redundancies" is the difference between a cost-cutter and an organisation designer.
- Internal fill rate is the succession proof. Seventy percent of senior vacancies filled internally is the outcome every board asks HR for and few can evidence.
- Industrial relations appears as a record, not a skill. "Three consecutive agreements without industrial action" beats listing "negotiation" among competencies.
Write decisions, not tasks
The clearest signal of readiness for director level is whether your resume describes things you did or choices you made. Managers complete work. Directors allocate, prioritise, refuse and restructure — and then live with the result.
Rewrite each bullet to contain three parts: the decision, the mechanism, the consequence. "Funded reliability as a standing 20% allocation" is a decision. "Cut severity-one incidents 64%" is the consequence. Together they are a director bullet; separately they are not.
And include at least one thing you decided against. Declining a rewrite, cutting an agency roster, killing a product line, refusing a hire. It is the most senior thing a resume can contain and virtually nobody includes it, because it feels like admitting you did less.
Translate your function into money
Every function has a native metric and a financial one. Directors are read by people outside their function, so the financial translation has to be on the page.
- HR. Turnover percentage becomes replacement cost. Time-to-hire becomes vacancy cost.
- Engineering. Deploy frequency becomes time-to-market. Incidents become downtime cost. Cloud efficiency becomes budget.
- Marketing. Impressions become return on spend. Awareness becomes acquisition cost.
- Operations. OEE becomes cost per unit. Downtime becomes lost output value.
- Service. Handling time becomes cost per contact. Satisfaction becomes retention.
Use the word "estimated" when the conversion is your own arithmetic. It costs nothing in credibility and protects you completely in the interview.
What the function looked like afterwards
A director's real product is an organisation that works differently than before. Not a project delivered — a capability that persists after they leave.
So somewhere on the page there should be a sentence about durable change: a pipeline that now fills vacancies internally, a release process that no longer needs heroics, an agency roster that stayed lean, a team that kept its people.
This is also the answer to the unspoken question at director interviews, which is never "can you do the work" but "what happens to your function after you move on".
Three rewrites at director level
Weak
Led the engineering team and improved development processes.
Strong
Cut severity-one incidents 64% by funding reliability work as a standing 20% allocation.
Improving processes is a task. Choosing to spend a fifth of capacity on it, against pressure, is a decision.
Weak
Managed agency relationships and marketing campaigns across the portfolio.
Strong
Cut agency count from nine to three, saving PKR 140M annually with no output loss.
Managing relationships describes maintenance. Reducing the roster describes judgement.
Weak
Responsible for reducing employee turnover across the organisation.
Strong
Cut voluntary turnover from 34% to 25%, saving an estimated PKR 190M in replacement cost.
Responsibility is an assignment. The rate, both ends, converted into money, is a result.
