A senior letter is not an application, it is the opening of a negotiation between two people of comparable standing. It is written to a chairman, a founder or a search partner — never to an HR inbox — and the register changes completely. Three samples: a response to a search consultant, a direct approach to a chairman, and a letter accompanying a board application.
A headhunter is not your reader — their client is. The letter has to give the consultant something they can repeat in a meeting you will not attend.
Thank you for the brief. I am interested, and I think the position is closer to my last two roles than the specification suggests.
The brief describes a group that has grown quickly, carries more debt than the board is comfortable with, and has a finance function that cannot close in under three weeks. I have taken exactly that combination once before. At Crescent Steel we lifted gross margin from 18.2% to 27.6%, raised PKR 14 billion while reducing net gearing from 2.1× to 0.8×, and got the board pack out five working days after month end. The margin and the gearing moved in the same period, which is the part I would want to discuss.
On the two areas the specification flags as essential: I have taken a group through IPO, and I led the finance workstream on a $258 million acquisition and its fourteen-month integration.
What I would want to understand before going further is how much of the current position is inherited and how much is structural, and what the chairman believes the answer is. I am available to speak this week or next.
No advertisement, no process. A direct letter to the person who can create the role, which at this level is how a large share of appointments actually happen.
I read that the group has taken a majority stake in two regional apparel chains and intends to consolidate them. I have done that work, and I am writing directly rather than waiting for a search process, because the useful conversation happens before the specification is written.
For the last six years I have been Managing Director of Zeen Retail, which I took from 22 stores to 86 and from PKR 1.9 billion to PKR 9.2 billion in revenue, returning 4.4 times to the founding investor. Gross margin moved less than a point across the whole expansion, which I mention because that is the number that usually gives way when a chain scales quickly.
Consolidating two acquired chains is a harder problem than opening stores. The systems will not match, the two teams will each believe their way is correct, and the cost of choosing slowly is higher than the cost of choosing wrongly. I would be glad to tell you how I would sequence the first hundred days.
If there is no role and no intention to create one, I would still value half an hour. I am in Lahore and can fit around your diary.
A board application is judged on independence, governance experience and what you add to the committee mix — not on operating achievements.
I am writing to express interest in appointment as an independent director, following the notice of two forthcoming vacancies in the company's 2026 annual report.
I am a Fellow Chartered Accountant with twelve years as a financial controller, most recently for a PKR 12 billion revenue group. I rebuilt a control environment following two qualified audit opinions and delivered three consecutive clean opinions thereafter, and I hold the Certified Internal Auditor qualification. My contribution would be to the audit committee, where I would expect to chair in due course.
On independence: I hold no shareholding in the company, have no commercial relationship with it or its subsidiaries, and no family relationship with any director or sponsor. I have completed the SECP-mandated Directors' Training Programme.
I recognise that board composition is a question of balance rather than individual merit, and I would be glad to discuss whether the mix the committee is seeking is one I would improve.
A senior letter is not a more polished version of a junior one. The relationship is different, and so is almost everything about how it should read.
The consultant is an intermediary who will present you in a meeting you are not in, using words they can remember. Write for that.
A large share of senior appointments are created rather than advertised, which means the letter that arrives before the process exists has an advantage no application can match.
It needs three things. A specific trigger — something the company did, announced or acquired, so the letter could not have been sent to anyone else. A view on the hard part of that problem, stated in three or four sentences with real judgement in it. And a small ask.
The small ask is what makes it work. "Half an hour, and if there is no role I would still value the conversation" is easy to grant and costs the recipient nothing to consider. "I would like to be considered for a position" asks them to decide something, and the easiest decision is no.
All three samples are free to read and copy. Want them as editable Word files, or a senior letter written from your own record and the brief in front of you? Both take a minute.
