Nurse CV, the long form.
Most nursing posts want a resume. Some want a CV — senior clinical roles, education posts, international applications, and anywhere a full record of competencies, courses and clinical hours is required. It is a different document: longer, comprehensive, and organised around competence rather than persuasion. Three samples: a ward sister, a clinical nurse educator, and a nurse applying to the UK.

Sample OneTwelve years · Senior clinical
Senior ward nursing is management as much as clinical practice — rostering, budgets, incidents, appraisals. All of it belongs on a CV and almost none appears on a resume.

Why this one works
- Infection rate is the headline. 4.2% to 1.6% on a surgical ward is patient safety expressed in the hospital's own audit numbers, and it is the strongest thing a senior nurse can present.
- Turnover appears. 31% to 12% is a management outcome that a director of nursing feels directly in the recruitment budget.
- Budget ownership is stated. PKR 14M annually moves her from senior clinician into management, which is exactly the transition a sister post represents.
- Competencies are rated. Same discipline as a medical CV — a matron planning skill mix needs to know what is independent.
Sample TwoFifteen years · Education post
An education post needs a different CV — courses delivered, curricula written, students assessed, and evidence that competence improved.

Why this one works
- Pass rate improvement is the education outcome. 68% to 91% after redesigning the curriculum proves the teaching worked, which is the only question an education post asks.
- Programmes built have their own section with adoption. "Adopted across four units" and "part of annual revalidation" show durable institutional change.
- Course evaluation is quantified. 4.7 across eight cohorts is evidence; being a dedicated educator is a claim.
- Instructor certification is distinguished from provider. ACLS Instructor is a different and more valuable credential, and the word matters.

An overseas application is a different document again. UK conventions apply — no photo, no date of birth — and the NMC pathway stage has to be visible immediately.

Why this one works
- NMC stage is in the header line. CBT passed, OSCE booked with the month. UK recruiters sort candidates by exactly this and will not hunt for it.
- IELTS is given with the band detail. "7.5 overall, no band below 7.0" — the NMC has a minimum for each band, so the overall score alone does not answer the question.
- Ratio and unit size are stated. "28-bed unit at 1:6" lets a UK ward manager compare directly with their own establishment.
- Mandatory training is listed with currency. UK trusts must evidence all of it on day one; showing it current shortens onboarding and is a genuine advantage.
- No photograph, no date of birth, no marital status. Correct for the UK and the opposite of what a Gulf application needs.
When a nurse needs a CV
For most ward posts a one or two page resume is right, and a long CV looks like a misunderstanding of the role. Four situations genuinely call for the long form.
- Senior clinical and management posts — sister, matron, nurse manager — where rostering, budget and governance responsibilities need documenting.
- Education and academic posts, where curricula, courses delivered and assessment outcomes matter more than shift work.
- International applications, where full competency lists, mandatory training currency and registration pathway stage are all required.
- Specialist posts requiring evidence of specific competencies — critical care, theatre, renal, oncology.
If the advertisement says CV, send a CV. If it says resume, send two pages. Sending the wrong one is read as not having read the advert.
The competency list
A nursing CV's most useful section is a rated competency list, and it is the section most often left out.
Write each competency and mark it independent, supervised, or theory-only. A matron building a skill mix for a ward is making a staffing decision, and an unrated list is useless to them — they will assume the minimum.
Group by domain: assessment, procedures, medication, specialist equipment, emergency response, end-of-life. And keep it to genuine clinical competencies. Communication and teamwork are expected of every nurse and add nothing.
The overseas pathways
Nurses migrate more than almost any profession and each destination has a distinct process. Where you are on that process is the first thing an overseas recruiter looks for.
- United Kingdom (NMC). State CBT status and date, OSCE booked or passed, IELTS or OET scores with individual bands. No photograph, no date of birth.
- Gulf (DHA, DOH, SCFHS, MOH, QCHP). Eligibility letter or licence number in the header, Dataflow verification status if complete. Photograph, nationality and passport validity are expected.
- Australia (AHPRA). Outcome-based assessment stage, English test, and whether a bridging programme is required.
- Canada (NNAS / provincial). NNAS advisory report status, provincial college, and NCLEX-RN result if taken.
In every case, give dates. "CBT passed March 2026, OSCE booked August 2026" tells a recruiter exactly when you can start, and that is what they are actually calculating.
Rate the competencies, and show the stage.
