Set 16 · By Profession · Resumes

Teacher resumes, and proof beyond the classroom.

Every teacher applying for a post writes that they are passionate about education. None of them are lying and none of them are distinguishable. What separates applications is what happened to the results, who else you developed, and what you built that outlived your own classes. Three samples: O-Level, primary, and a first teaching post.

Why this one works

The numbers a school already keeps

Teaching feels unquantifiable from the inside and is measured constantly from the outside. Everything below exists in your school's records, and a principal reads all of it every term.

Ask the examinations officer or the academic coordinator for your own historical figures before you write. They are usually happy to provide them and it takes one email.

What outlived your classes

The single strongest line on a teaching resume is something you built that the school kept using after you stopped teaching that class. A scheme of work. A remedial programme. A reading log. A phonics rollout. A club that still runs.

It answers the question a principal is really asking, which is not "can you teach" — your qualification largely settles that — but "what will this department look like in three years if I appoint you".

Most teachers have built at least one such thing and never mention it, because it felt like ordinary work at the time. Write it down, and say plainly that it is still in use.

Applying for a first post

A fresh B.Ed graduate is not empty-handed. Teaching practice is supervised employment in everything but name, and it should be written with the same structure as a job.

Three rewrites for teachers

Weak

Passionate and dedicated teacher committed to student success and lifelong learning.

Strong

O-Level mathematics teacher with seven years and 140 students across five sections. Took A*/A grades from 22% to 41%.

Every applicant is passionate. Only one of them changed the grade distribution.

Weak

Responsible for planning and delivering engaging lessons to students.

Strong

Designed a remedial programme for borderline students, adopted across the secondary wing.

Planning lessons is the job description. What you built that the school kept is the argument.

Weak

Completed teaching practice as part of my B.Ed programme.

Strong

Completed 320 supervised hours across two schools, planning and delivering 90+ observed lessons.

The first is an administrative fact. The second is four months of evidence.
