Sample OneEight years · Construction projects
The panel carries contact details, certifications and software. The main column carries every job, every date and every bullet — the parts a tracker must read in order.

Why this one works
- Nothing in the panel is load-bearing. Contact details, certifications, software. If a tracker read the panel badly, the job history would still arrive intact — which is the only test that matters for a two-column layout.
- Safety appears as a number. "Zero lost-time injuries across 2.1M site hours" is the first thing a construction client checks and the last thing most engineers think to write.
- Two directions on the flagship project. Four weeks early and 3% under budget. Time or money alone is half an argument.
- PEC registration is in the header. As with clinical work, engineering in Pakistan is regulated — the number should never require an email to obtain.
Sample TwoSix years · Commercial architecture
Design fields are where a panel earns its place. Software proficiency, awards and registration sit together on the left, leaving the main column free for built work.

Why this one works
- Area figures do the work. 90,000 and 340,000 square feet tell an architecture practice the scale of project this person can be trusted with. It is the profession's natural unit.
- The portfolio URL is in the header. For any design role the resume is a summary; the work is the argument. Make the link impossible to miss.
- The BIM transition is a leadership bullet in a junior role. Running a nine-person office through a software change at that level says more than any adjective.
- Software is in the panel, not the profile. It matters and it is searchable, but it is not the reason to hire an architect.
Sample ThreeNine years · Supply chain · Dubai
The same layout in a different colour, and a longer career. Nine years across three countries, and the panel still holds nothing that would hurt to lose — every employer, date and number sits in the main column where both a parser and a person read first.

AUG 2016 — MAY 2019
- Managed indirect procurement for two plants, GHS 18M annual spend

Why this one works
- The panel still carries nothing critical. Contact, skills, education, certification. Every employer, date and number is in the main column, so a parser that mishandles columns loses decoration rather than evidence.
- Colour costs nothing in an applicant tracking system. The software reads text, not ink. A green panel parses exactly like a grey one, so a page can look like something and still behave.
- Nine years, three countries, one page. The scope line does the work: 40 suppliers, six countries, USD 22M. A reader knows the size of the job before the first bullet.
- Every job carries a number. 71% to 94%. Six days to 3.5. Sixty vendors to 22. The layout is what gets noticed; the numbers are what gets him interviewed.
When two columns are safe
The blanket rule — never use two columns — exists because the failure is invisible. Your resume looks perfect on screen, the tracker scrambles it, and nobody ever tells you.
But the rule is broader than the risk. Parsers fail when they cannot decide the reading order of things that belong in sequence. Job title, employer, start date, end date — those must stay in one uninterrupted column, in order.
Everything else is a list where order barely matters. Contact details, software, certifications, languages. If a parser reads those in a strange sequence, nothing is lost, because each item means the same thing wherever it lands.
So the line is simple. Sequence in the main column. Lists in the panel. Follow that and a two-column resume is as safe as a one-column one.
When to use one column anyway
Even done correctly, a side panel is not always the right choice.
- Government and public-sector applications. Older systems, stricter formats, and often a required template. Do not be clever.
- Large-volume graduate schemes. Thousands of applications through one pipeline; the safest possible format wins.
- When you have eleven years to fit. A panel costs roughly a third of your page width. Long histories need the space more than they need the styling.
- When the advert names a file format or template. Follow the instruction exactly. It is sometimes a test of whether you read the advert.
And one that surprises people: if you are applying through a recruitment agency, the agency will frequently retype your resume into its own template before the client sees it. Elegant layout is discarded at that step; only the words survive.
What belongs in the panel
- Safe: contact details, software and tools, certifications with years, languages, professional memberships, short skill lists, a portfolio link.
- Never: job titles, employers, employment dates, bullets describing what you did, education dates, anything where order carries meaning.
A useful test before sending: copy the whole document, paste it into Notepad, and read the result. If job titles still sit next to their employers and their dates, you are fine. If the panel contents have been shuffled into the middle of your job history, move the panel contents until they cannot do damage.
Three rewrites for project work
Weak
Managed multiple construction projects from start to finish.
Strong
Deliver commercial builds of PKR 400M to 1.4B, managing 12 subcontractors on site.
Value range and subcontractor count answer the only two questions a construction client has.
Weak
Maintained a strong focus on health and safety at all times.
Strong
Zero lost-time injuries across 2.1M cumulative site hours.
Focus is an intention. Hours without injury is a record, and it is already in the site log.
Weak
Worked on various architectural projects of different sizes.
Strong
Lead designer on a 90,000 sq ft mixed-use retail development, concept through handover.
"Various" and "different sizes" are what people write when they have not checked the drawings for the actual area. Check them; the number is on the title block.
